Camover

A few of us noticed Bixi has begun installing cameras with motion light sensors at some of their bike stations. We won’t watch idly as more technology and surveillance enter our lives and neighborhoods. We took it upon ourselves to go after one of the cameras, with simple tools, and with the aim of destroying it. The camera was a little higher and tougher than we thought, so we only managed to damage and not destroy it. We are wishing our comrades more success on their first tries!

About a month ago, without any announcement, a large camera tower was placed in the middle of Marche Maisonneuve, Hochelaga. The tower was a new tool of AI camera surveillance developed by the local enemy company GardaWorld. These towers of control are being rolled out all over North America by the thousands by the company’s new subsidiary ECAM. Enraged by the continued encroachment of surveillance technology in our lives and emboldened by a winter full of attacks on cameras in the city, we decided to do something about it. ...

This winter, teams got together to begin a new season of Camover. Some of them decided to film a few of their achievements. The SPVM has implemented AI surveillance software that could integrate thousands of cameras both public and private. For attack on the infrastructures of techno-dystopia! Most expect to be captured on video when walking through downtown streets, which are often littered with traditional types of security cameras, such as the dome cameras, bullet cameras, or the newer remote controlled PTZ (Point, Tilt, Zoom) cameras. Previously, this was less expected in residential neighborhoods, which now have an increasing amount of home surveillance systems like Amazon’s Ring or Google Nest cameras. Police departments have seized on the increasing popularity of these devices and struck deals with their parent companies to directly incorporate them into existing surveillance networks and access data without the knowledge or permission of the camera owner. Some doorbell style cameras offer forms of audio surveillance as well: Amazon’s Ring cameras, easily spotted by their ominous glowing circle, can reportedly capture conversation-level audio from up to 25 feet away. Recently, we went on a nighttime stroll and removed some Google Nest and Amazon Ring doorbell surveillance cameras from a couple residential streets. These products, which one can easily spot at night by their blue or green ring of light, are popping up more and more in Montreal and elsewhere. The cameras can store recorded video on the cloud for up to 60 days. It’s been well documented that Amazon is using Ring to build a private surveillance network, fully integrated with police departments, under the guise of combating package theft. ...
