The night of November 16, we went to visit the suburbs of Quebec City, or more precisely 1205 rue Imperiale, so as to leave a message for Mr. Jean-Yves Lavoie. For those who aren’t familiar with him, Mr. Lavoie is the president of Junex, a company that generates its profits (or, at least, tries to) from exploiting the territory of so-called “Quebec”, meaning among other things fracking projects in “Gaspesie”.

On Sunday September 10, we mobilized in solidarity with the ongoing resistance against the extractive oil industry in Gaspésie, in particular, Junex and its investors. Corporations like Junex (and their investors) collude with provincial and federal governments. These collaborations exemplify how neoliberal capitalism (as the current economic and political context) functions to sustain the settler-colonial state of Canada. Recently announced legislation allowing for drilling and fracking in rivers and lakes within so-called Quebec demonstrates such complicity to the point of absurdity - the state no longer seems to even care about making it appear that its role is neutral in paving the way for the poisoning of water and land for capitalist profit.

Several groups are currently fighting against the exploitation of hydrocarbons in Gaspesie in order to prevent Junex, Petrolia, Squatex and others industries from sacking the peninsula.

The moment is opportune to put an end to their bullshit because our balance of power is growing and because the petroleum industry is not yet entrenched in people’s mentalities.

With this in mind, we are calling for the organization of actions through September 4-10 in support of the blockade of the Junex oil wells, the river camp in Gaspe and in solidarity with the municipality of Ristigouche Sud- Est . On September 5, Ristigouche’s lawsuit will be launched by Gastem for $ 1.5 million for a regulation to protect the drinking water sources of its 168 citizens.

Today, we traditional council chiefs from the 1st and the 7th Districts of Mi’kma’ki have gathered at the Junexit Banquet organized by the Camp by the River. We are here not only to support the occupation that has been set up on August 7th against Junex but also to assert our inherent rights and title over our unceded and unsurrendered territory, as affirmed by the 1763 Royal Proclamation. We assert our presence here to protect our territory under the Protection clauses for unceded lands, as protected by Constitutional Rights, Charter Rights, Human Rights, and International Rights.

The blockade of the Junex Galt oil wells in Gaspésie has had much written about it in recent days. Nevertheless, information on what was happening at the site of the blockade has been hard to come by. The cops, as the blockaders, have not been particularly forthcoming.

I won’t elaborate on the how or the why of this action.

I only want to share moments of an incredible power that will never be relayed by the media, but that were quite real.

This morning, a huge banner was dropped outside the riding office of the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Pierre Arcand.

This action comes in the wake of the River Camp being established at the entry to the oil company Junex’s Galt 4 drilling site.

No to fracking, Junexit from Gaspésie, for an end to all fossil fuel development.

I am Gary Metallic Sr., District Chief of our 7th District Gespegawagi traditional Tribal government. We want to personally thank the defenders who have set up a blockade to stop Junex from drilling for oil on our District lands who are in Gaspe right now. We will support any defenders in the protecting of our lands, and resources from being poisoned by these corporate raiders. All we ask is that it will be a peaceful struggle, similar to the recent North Dakota protest where any form of violence was not to be used. We welcome all races to join us in this struggle to protect Mother Earth and her resources. The most critical resource to be protected for which all life is dependent on is our water, in unity only can we find the strength and tenacity to stop the oil and gas industry in their exploitation and poisoning of our waters and resources.
