A few of us noticed Bixi has begun installing cameras with motion light sensors at some of their bike stations. We won’t watch idly as more technology and surveillance enter our lives and neighborhoods. We took it upon ourselves to go after one of the cameras, with simple tools, and with the aim of destroying it. The camera was a little higher and tougher than we thought, so we only managed to damage and not destroy it. We are wishing our comrades more success on their first tries!

About a month ago, without any announcement, a large camera tower was placed in the middle of Marche Maisonneuve, Hochelaga. The tower was a new tool of AI camera surveillance developed by the local enemy company GardaWorld. These towers of control are being rolled out all over North America by the thousands by the company’s new subsidiary ECAM. Enraged by the continued encroachment of surveillance technology in our lives and emboldened by a winter full of attacks on cameras in the city, we decided to do something about it.

Comrades, the time is now! The SPVM hath declared a registry of cameras, with nefarious AI to track our every move! We shall not bow to their surveillance! Take up these posters ( FR

This winter, teams got together to begin a new season
of Camover. Some of them decided to film a few of their achievements.

The SPVM has implemented AI surveillance software that could integrate thousands of cameras both public and private. For attack on the infrastructures of techno-dystopia! Fewer prying eyes, more dead circuits on pavement.

2nd round: from Valentine’s Day to March 15th.

We’re just a few veterans of past Camovers who decided to take a break from scheming this month’s outings to share some tips with other crews. We prefer to win by tallying more points than y’all over a full month’s efforts and not because a bunch of you got busted.

First, let’s consider the current state of consumer camera technology, which has advanced in the past decade since the advent of the Camover tradition. This information is easily gathered by browsing product listings on Amazon. It is safe to assume that the security cameras we come across on homes and businesses, including doorbell cams, have certain capabilities:

-Video Synopsis of a person’s comings and goings over a period of time
-Facial Recognition

This text is a case study of video surveillance in France, and most of its content is based on the French context. However, we believe it can be useful to an international audience because understanding how video surveillance works in France can help to understand how it works in other places, and because a lot of technical, general information is scattered throughout the text.

Most expect to be captured on video when walking through downtown streets, which are often littered with traditional types of security cameras, such as the dome cameras, bullet cameras, or the newer remote controlled PTZ (Point, Tilt, Zoom) cameras. Previously, this was less expected in residential neighborhoods, which now have an increasing amount of home surveillance systems like Amazon’s Ring or Google Nest cameras. Police departments have seized on the increasing popularity of these devices and struck deals with their parent companies to directly incorporate them into existing surveillance networks and access data without the knowledge or permission of the camera owner. Some doorbell style cameras offer forms of audio surveillance as well: Amazon’s Ring cameras, easily spotted by their ominous glowing circle, can reportedly capture conversation-level audio
from up to 25 feet away.
Recently, we went on a nighttime stroll and removed some Google Nest and Amazon Ring doorbell surveillance cameras from a couple residential streets.

These products, which one can easily spot at night by their blue or green ring of light, are popping up more and more in Montreal and elsewhere. The cameras can store recorded video on the cloud for up to 60 days.

It’s been well documented
that Amazon is using Ring to build a private surveillance network, fully integrated with police departments, under the guise of combating package theft.

Anarchists hate cameras. We love games. That’s why some friends in the Sud-West took up the call to play CAMOVER
. Masked up in black (obvi), we bagged a bunch of nosey CCTVs and painted over many others. No Face No Case! Shouts out to hommies in Hochelaga
throwing down. Keep the good work up and the snitch cameras down.

From one participant:

CamOVER!? No Question. We hit the street four deep, two on the lookout, real casual, walkies and cigarettes, and got to bagging. Rope lines snaking through the air, cracks off streetlights as cams tumble down, we caught a side-eye from a citizen passerby and got back at it, like, FUCK YOU&YOUR CAMERAS. We dipped when the cops rolled up, stashed the cams alley-side, and swooped em up the next day.”

Anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info

Over the last few months, friends have been playing Camover
in the neighbourhood of Hochelaga. We’ve destroyed around twenty security cameras. For your pleasure (and certainly for our own as well!), here’s a photo in which we see a friend sporting a necklace of optical trophies.

In response to the recent smashings of gentrifiers in the neighbourhood, and in the context of twenty-two businesses being vandalized in the last year, the city and the police have publicly announced a renewed collaboration. They’re desperately trying to reassert control, faced with people who “aren’t afraid of the police”, and their initiative to install more cameras shows it. Of course, the police know that it’s impossible to be everywhere all of the time. There will always be loopholes that allow those who are creative and well-prepared to attack. That’s where cameras come in: to make us feel powerless and watched. But our masks will continue to give us power against any camera. No face, no case. And so, to keep up morale, we’ve decided to see this increase in the presence of cameras in the neighbourhood as an occasion for more CamOver and increased sabotage of the mechanisms of control that the authorities put in place.

In CamOver, you play a group of humans confronted with an invasion of cameras in a gentrified neighborhood. The struggle against the cameras is important, but your own survival is essential! To win you must form teams with friends in your neighborhoods and destroy as many cameras as possible. The game takes place throughout the summer. At the end, the neighborhood with the most points wins the game.

During the night of February 26, inspired by the demonstrators that afternoon who attacked the police and refused to be dispersed, we used a fire extinguisher filled with paint to spray a CCTV camera and a large (A) on the walls of Cégep du Vieux Montréal. During the night of March 3, we broke a CCTV camera at Cégep Maisonneuve by dropping a slab of concrete onto it from the roof. The front entrance windows were also smashed with a hammer.

Camover 2013
The GAME;
The idea of the game is to smash and destroy as much cctv-cams as possible. For this we decided to announce a competition. For joining in you need a group with a name that starts with command…, briagde…, etc. and ends with a historic person.
