Montreal Anarchist Zine Fair 2026

Sun, 30 Aug 2026 00:00:00 +0000

If, for a fleeting moment, we were to pry our attention away from the glow of our screens, we could set out on a path, eyes wide open, through the city—a path that would shatter any illusion of social cohesion.

Every day, the powerful lock us up a bit more into their world of concrete, borders, mono-cultures, monitors, and algorithms. To the fate they have in store for us, we oppose a dangerous dream of limitless freedom. We want to fight against this prison-city and the techno-industrial dystopia it belongs to, here and now!

Announcing the 9th Annual Halifax Anarchist Bookfair

Saturday September 12th {rain date September 13th}

In every corner of the globe, in every culture, in every language, across time and place, there have been freedom-seeking peoples. They have been labelled fugitives, rebels, revolutionaries, abolitionists and anarchists. Like them, we seek to build social and political projects that speak to the needs of our communities, that weave our joy, grief and resistance into a basket that can hold enough for all to share. History does not remember well people like us, because we build homes and communities that feed each other, care for the land and are a threat to power. Those who seek to rule us build pyramids, cathedrals, skyscrapers, prisons and AI data centers in their vain quests for immortality & domination.

Announcing Constellation 2026

Wed, 14 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0000

From Constellation

Everywhere we look, the forces of domination strain to keep our worlds within reach of the death star of authority. In a new era of competing nationalisms, the Canadian state reconditions its war on the land and those who live in relation with it by threatening new mines and pipelines from coast to coast. Plans converge toward a massive expansion of the military. AI mass surveillance technologies augment the already unchecked power of the police. We are expected to look away as the CEOs and politicians who walk our streets are willing partners in genocide, or are beaten and locked up if we act. Borders harden, and fascism creeps forward.

This reportback was inspired by a Mastodon post by Franklin Lopez , who wrote:

“It’s just so fucking cool to be back at the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair after so many years away. Gotta be real—back in the day, the Fair could feel like a stress factory. Lotta tension, lotta unresolved beefs, and way too many identity politickers turning the place into their personal UFC octagon.

Appropriating the Bookfair: A Reportback from Constellation 2025

We heard you like reportbacks from anarchist festivals; may others from this one follow. May 15th-21st, 2025 in Montreal was the second edition of Constellation. Over seven days, there were book launches, parties, benefit shows, bike rides, a book arpentage, a squatted rave in an abandoned magic store, a barbecue, a barbecue that blocked fascists, a mesh networking day, a radical consent workshop, and more. People attended from across the country, from south of the border, and from overseas, and events consistently saw packed rooms, even when there were five happening at the same time.

With each passing day, our lives are further controlled by power structures that subjugate our bodies and land in service of profit. Our social lives have become confined by tech billionaires who horde our data and manipulate our behaviour to train AI. Our alienation from the natural world has become normalized as it crumbles beneath our feet. As the rearing heads of fascism strobe across the doomscroll, we are reminded that now, as always, is the time for anarchism.

This response to the statement by the Bookfair Collective was posted by @cedar on Kolektiva.social.

Well, this is quite the dishonest and self-serving post. I’m pretty surprised and disappointed, and there’s a lot that deserves a response, but I’m just going to focus on a few things.

You use incredibly vague and yet loaded language to talk about the conflict in the bookfair collective, and this is deliberately deceptive. You want to have us believe that some serious harm occurred, and not something that makes you look silly, like, for instance, members of your collective being unable to handle disagreement about your decision to ban tarot cards at the 2023 bookfair.

To hide this basic fact - that some people melted down when others didn’t simply accept their assertion that tarot is cultural appropriation - you are talking about “behaviours rooted in the logic of white supremacy.” Yes, issues of identity can be hard and disagreement around ideas can be stressful, but dressing up your attempts at shutting down criticism as anti-racism is truly a depressing comment on the anarchist space.

Final Statement of the Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival

Fri, 27 Sep 2024 00:00:00 +0000

From the Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival

After 18 years of incredible anarchist theatre, the Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival collective has decided to stop producing the festival.

We want to thank all the artists, volunteers, former collective members and the public who attended, for their generous contributions and support.

This was an all-volunteer festival with no government or corporate sponsorship.

We will gladly assist other anarchists who would like to mount another festival.

CONSTELLATION is seeking event proposals. On Saturday, May 25th, during the tabling event at CÉDA and CCGV, there will be space for both pre-planned and spontaneous activities – order and chaos in equal measure. We aspire not to curate a singular experience but rather to create a space for anarchists to gather, conspire, and share in a multitude of experiences. We’ll provide the space but we need you to fill it!

Online Calendar Launch - CONSTELLATION: An Anarchist Festival in Montréal

We’re happy to announce the launch of our online calendar platform, where anyone can publish events as part of Constellation. Simply go to https://constellation.nublogs.org/events and follow the link to add an event.

One of our goals for this festival is to decentralize the organizing process. We want all anarchists in the region to feel empowered to make the last weekend of May their own. We strongly believe that more people doing more things will create a more interesting and rebellious weekend.

Call for Tablers - CONSTELLATION: An Anarchist Festival in Montréal

Mon, 01 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0000

From Constellation

CONSTELLATION will feature a bookfair on Saturday, May 25th, at the CÉDA and CCGV buildings in Parc Vinet (métro Lionel-Groulx). We invite booksellers, zine distros, artists, and makers of other material of interest to anarchists and the anarcho-curious to table at the event. Tabling will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but you can show up as early as 8:30 a.m. for setup.

As organizers of CONSTELLATION, we would like to clarify that we see our role as helping facilitate an anarchist bookfair space, not as content arbiters.

Rethinking Identity, Safety, and Appropriation – Or: Why is Tarot Banned at the Bookfair?

Sat, 27 May 2023 11:49:00 +0000

Anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info

The Montreal Anarchist Bookfair’s Statement on Cultural Appropriation reads, “To the best of our capacity, we will not be accepting applications from people wanting to present or table if we know them to be making culturally appropriative choices in how they dress or behave.” The statement was most recently updated in 2019 and can be read in full at www.anarchistbookfair.ca .

\\\**

This year, the bookfair collective instructed two tabling applicants—including Black-owned bookstore Racines—not to sell tarot cards at their tables because doing so would constitute cultural appropriation. Their decision was based on a claim that tarot was developed by the Romani. I was surprised to hear this. I’m by no means a tarot expert, but I had always thought that it was created by White Europeans.

We are at a breaking point. Thread by thread our global economic system is unraveling before our eyes as we dance on the precipice of all the converging and cascading crises of these turbulent times. From pandemic to war, inflation to crumbling supply chains, ecological breakdown to housing scarcity: we are feeling the crushing weight of capitalism more than ever.

We will not go back to “normal”. The pandemic has only intensified social control and surveillance, capitalism and colonialism, with those in power deepening their pockets through intensified industrial extraction, skyrocketing housing prices, and intolerable working conditions. While the defenders of this racist colonial system look out for their own interests, we know that we are the ones who must look out for and care for each other. The roots of ecological destruction, poverty, white supremacy, colonialism, police violence, patriarchy, etc lie within the construct of authority itself. Anarchism helps us to understand the roots of these systems of power, articulate our desires for self-determination, and dream of a world where all are free. It is crucial in these times that we find each other, create space to remember what liberation can feel like, share our grief and rage, and bring collective energy into our struggles.

Montreal Anarchist Bookfair: What We're Doing in May 2020

Mon, 20 Apr 2020 17:23:22 +0000

From the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair Collective

Hello everyone,

For a variety of reasons, most of which have to do with COVID-19, the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair collective has made the tough–but in our view, responsible–decision that we are not going to organize the big two-day gathering that has taken place around parc Vinet for most of the past twenty years. Instead, though, we hope to organize a different kind of event on May 17, 2020, to sustain our connections, politics, and solidarity.

Announcement Regarding the 2020 Montreal Anarchist Bookfair

Tue, 31 Mar 2020 13:36:14 +0000

From the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair

Hello friends,

We are writing to update you on the 2020 Montreal Anarchist Bookfair. As everyone is more than aware, the global pandemic has resulted in the postponement or cancellation of large gatherings, and many upcoming anarchist bookfairs worldwide (from Europe to Aotearoa and beyond) have been forced to call off their events. Our collective has yet to make a decision. It is clear to us, however, that if we organize a gathering on the weekend of May 16 and 17, it will look significantly different from what the bookfair has been for the past twenty years.

The Montreal Anarchist Bookfair is the largest anarchist gathering in North America and 2019 is it’s 20th year. In this episode, I interviewed two members of this year’s bookfair collective. Topics include:

- what, if anything, does the bookfair have to do with books?

-is the bookfair for “us,” for “recruitment,” or both?

-how much should event planners try to shape a space like this? what kinds of policies are appropriate and how, if at all, should they be enforced?
